Easter By George Herbert

The 'Easter' poem, by George Herbert, brings forth the significance of Easter and Jesus Christ's sacrifices. The poet has used subtlety in describing Easter celebrations and the importance of Jesus Christ and his sacrifices. The major characteristics of George Herbert's poems are that they are highly influenced by Christianity and holy Bible. In many poems, he has used God and love as his theme. This poem is psychological in nature, with a metaphysical meaning. When one reads the poem, it feels as if George is in a conversation with God.

Easter

I got me flowers to straw Thy way,
I got me boughs off many a tree;
But Thou wast up by break of day,
And brought’st Thy sweets along with Thee.

The sunne arising in the East,
Though he give light, and th’ East perfume,
If they should offer to contest
With Thy arising, they presume.

Can there be any day but this,
Though many sunnes to shine endeavor?
We count three hundred, but we misse:
There is but one, and that one ever.
