I Promise You By Nicholas Gordon

In the cute poem 'I Promise You My Innocence', American poet Nicholas Gordon promises his beloved his innocence. Innocence is a term used to indicate a state of moral purity or general lack of guilt, with respect to any kind of crime, sin, or wrongdoing. In this poem, Gordon is saying that he will always be innocent towards his beloved, whether the fire fills the sky or sun erupts in ecstasy. With excellent use of simile, the poem portrays vibrancy in the theme and language. The poet shows extremity of love when he says that he would become land and sea for his beloved and would fill her world with love.

I Promise You

I promise you my innocence
When fire fills the sky,
When the sun erupts in ecstasy
And fading furies die.

I want to fill your life with love,
So full you want to cry,
And make myself your land and sea,
Your mirror and your eye.

I lay my happiness upon
The pillow of your sigh;
Your joy, your love, your need of me
Is where my angels lie.
