Is This What Love Is By Joanna Fuchs

In the poem ‘Is This What Love Is’, Joanna Fuchs describes the life of her and partner, who have lost the love that they once shared. She asks where their love has disappeared and wonders why they always end up having a fight. There is no love in her life, leaving behind bitterness in its wake. The poem is a beautiful description of a phase in life, where ego and quarrels have crept up in a relationship. Through this poem, we see that Joanna is fed up of the quarrels and the crumbling relationship. The result is that she often starts to think that if this is what love and being together means, she will be better off alone. It is true that love never dies a natural death. However, it is also necessary for both the partners to keep on making efforts, lest the love between them withers away.

Is This What Love Is

Is this all we have together?
Is this what love really is,
Yelling through a quarrel
And making up with a kiss?

Why can’t we get along?
Why do we have to fight?
We starve true love by day
And feed lust all through the night.

I wish we’d settle down;
I wonder where peace went.
Why do we pick at each other;
Why can’t we be content?

If this is what love is,
If tenderness has flown,
I’m thinking more and more,
It’s better to be alone.
