The poem 'Ode To Me' is funny in the sense that, ordinarily, an ode is written for someone else, for showing respect to that person. However, here, the poet has written an ode for himself, which is full of self-appreciation. In the funny poem, Gordon Costello writes that he is a great fellow and quite decent too. Like writing self-epitaph, writing ode to oneself is an odd practice and this is what makes it humorous. Costello says that though he is becoming old and blind, he is still good and kind. In the poem, he has tried to create his alter-ego.
Ode To Me
Oh, Gordon J. Costello
Is a really decent fellow
And I wish more of my friends
Were just like him.
He is wise and good and kind
(Though going bald and going blind),
And, although he's pushing forty
He's still slim.
How I wish I were like him!
