In the poem 'The Sister's, poet Rainer Maria Rilke uses metaphoric and contradictory language to portray the relationship between a brother and sister. He was a modernist poet, who tried to search solitude and ultimate destination in his poems (the major characteristic of Modernist poetry). He was highly influenced by Russian monism, which is reflected in his poetry writings too. In this poem, Rainer says that though there is difference of age between him and his sister, both of them are identical to a certain extent. Both are living on the support of each other and supplement each other. With this sister poem, he shows that dynamism forms the essence of the eternity of a brother-sister relationship.
The Sisters
Look how the same possibilities
Unfold in their opposite demeanors,
As though one saw different ages
Passing through two identical rooms.
Each thinks that she props up the other,
While resting wearily on her support;
And they can't make use of one another,
For they cause blood to rest on blood,
When as in the former times they softly touch
And try, along the tree-lined walks,
To feel themselves conducted and to lead;
Ah, the ways they go are not the same.
Ah, the ways they go are not the same.
